The Civic Photographic Archive of Milan was founded at the beginning of the 20th century and its first inventories began in 1933. It owes its origin to Luca Beltrami (1854-1933): an architect, art historian, photographer and photography collector. The Archive has developed over time thanks to donations and purchases of major photo collections, to which cataloguing projects have been dedicated - following ICCD (Central Institute for Catalogues and Documentation) regulations for F cards, as well as renovation and study projects. The Archive aims at preserving, protecting and enhancing the cultural value of its photographic heritage, serving the public interest in line with the most up-to-date national and international scientific research. Its activities lead to scientific, publishing and exhibition projects, also in collaboration with research bodies, museums and universities, aimed at advancing studies and research on the history of photography.
The online publication of the photographic collections of the Civic Photographic Archive of Milan enables the public to access an extraordinary wealth of knowledge.
The Fotografieincomune portal also includes some of the photographic collections of Palazzo Moriggia | Museo del Risorgimento e Palazzo Morando | Costume Moda Immagine, which can be consulted at the respective Institutes.
